For PHA Kids Fun Days…We partner with the YWCA of Pekin to provide a Literacy/Art/Exercise program for the Children of Pekin Housing Authority.  Children are transported to the YWCA for some fun days being held off of the PHA property.  Children are provided a light breakfast before embarking on Literacy, Art, and Exercise activities for the day.  For 2022 – all reading materials were focused on Refugees and Immigrant experiences.  Children then created arts and crafts projects that relate to these stories they have read.  The Children were also able to have some time to play at the outdoor playground and probably most exciting for the Children is free time in the pool!  All were provided lunch, and then transported back home with snack packs in hand after each fun day event.  These events were held throughout the month of July.  At the end of the program, each child was able to select their favorite book, and was provided a copy of that book to take home with them.  Additionally, all Children that participated were able to go on a final ‘field trip” for the last day of the program and they were also treated to lunch in a sit-down restaurant.  This ‘field trip’ was to the Sculpture Walk in Peoria and also to visit the Peoria Art Guild. Last stop was lunch at a local sit-down restaurant and then back home. Children really seem to enjoy these Fun Days and often times we have a waitlist for others wanting to attend, once we reach our limit for attendance.
